The Palestinian Statehood: Was the Resolution 67/19 a ‘Birth Certificate’?

Filistin Devleti (Eyaleti): Çözüm 67/19 a 'Doğum Belgesi miydi?

Today Israel-Palestine conflict is approximately a century-old problem. Two states alongside, co-existing peacefully is thought to be the only solution for the Israeli-Palestinian problem. This formula is usually repeated but the meaning varies according to almost anything. Some assume that Palestine is already a state, others assume that Palestine is not yet one. A third group of people, on the other hand, Palestine should become a state, noting that it does not meet the statehood criteria. It is true that it seems to be getting more and more difficult to draw up an objective, a well-balanced and a fair picture of this issue. This shows much of the political bickering about Palestinian statehood. Therefore, this essay will critically examine whether or not, or to what extent Palestine is a state.

Filistin Devleti ve Doğum Belgesi İlişkisi, Doğum Belgesi Çözümün Neresinde?

A. INTRODUCTION

This paper begins with one of the belles lettres, ever written, The Overcoat.1 The Overcoat is a fascinating short story by Nikolai Gogol,2 published in 1842. The story influenced future Russian novelists so profoundly, as expressed by Fyodor Dostoevsky: "We all come out from Gogol's Overcoat.”3

Whenever I think of Palestine, Gogol’s Overcoat appears in my mind, or vice versa. As stated in the quote, like future generations of Russian literature emerging from The Overcoat; I have always felt in the deepest parts of my heart that Palestine is a mother-land, like giving birth to all the holy places on Earth. In no other single place, it can be found such a concentration of sites sacred to three major religions. Nevertheless, the residents of this territory never managed to live in peace.
