Babat who was a university student at the time of the incident was murdered. His family applied ECHR claiming that right of life and right of effective investigation were violated.

Önder Babat was a law student at İstanbul University. The university administration opened up a disciplinary investigation regarding the student’s participation in an illegal demonstration. Then he was shot from his head with a 9 mm bullet after he had left the Office of the Revolutionary Movement Magazine in Beyoğlu. It hasn’t been found out who the attackers were, where they came from and why they shot Babat.

The police examined the crime scene; photos were taken. However, only some of the witnesses were questioned and their statements were taken. the police concluded that a stone had fallen to Babat’s head and caused his death.
